[edit] Poland: Hasty, shockingly incompetent exhumation of 65 skeletons with a digger
November 20, 2008
Description: Malbork, Poland: Shockingly incompetent exhumation of 65 human remains with a digger on 28.10.2008
Full story: In the city of Malbork, Pomeranian Voivodeship, northern Poland, on the 28th of October, during digging of a pit as part of construction of a hotel, a common grave was discovered by the construction workers. As reported by the Internauts of a marienburg.pl forum, the 65 human remains were thorn in pieces with a large digger, which was done under observation of local municipality clerks.
The skeletons were taken out of the pit by means of a large excavator, which was destroying them. The bones were separated from the soil by sudden movements of the loading part of the digger, and separated bones were moved away in plastic bags by a funeral service company, and (as local minicipal claim) were "burried" at a local communal cementary on the 02.11.2008.
But the citizens have been reporting to have found more human bones even 2 weeks after the "burial", when the rain came and washed down more soil...
According to the Portal Pomorza website, the Police Criminal Department was informed about this situation first after the fact, by the public prosecutor, who in turn was informed by the journalist of Portal Pomorza.
The work of the company, which took away the remains, was commissioned by the Town Council, clerks of which were present during the humiliating "exhumation". The Town Council refuses any information on the matter.
According to journalists' information, some tasks of the art conservator in Malbork, who should supervise the exhumation, were done by the mayor of the city of Malbork... and it was the mayor, acting on behalf of the art conservator, gave an opinion about the hotel construction project. Will he then exact the statements of the written justification of his own decision? In the document, he reminds the investor, European Mortgage Fund (Europejski Fundusz Hipoteczny), that construction in this area should be supervised by art conservators and archeologists.
But, as witnesses state, no archeologist was present during the "exhumation" by means of the digger. Obviously, if there was such person there, the construction would have to be stopped and proper exhumation would have have to take place, but the construction would get delayed significantly.
The comments on different forums emphasize the fact, that it was the local self-government, who humiliated the human remains, by destroying the skeletons with heavy machines. People feel that the dignity of human being was offended, that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was violated in an inhumane manner.
The skeletons' skulls had gun holes. According to historians from the Castle Museum in Malbork, it is probable, that those were skeletons of German civils from the Second World War. The prosecutor states, that neither bullets, nor any identifiable objects were found. Unfortunately, neither bullets, nor any objects were sought for, so the identification of date of death, or the character of the common grave has been made extremely difficult.
However, all the journalists say, thay will return to this case, until it is solved.
